common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. The North Carolina Real Estate Commission no longer permits remote testing. You must take the exam in person at an authorized Pearson VUE test center. Fortunately, there are locations available throughout the state.

  • You can retake the exam as many times as needed within your 180-day eligibility period. However, if you fail or miss your scheduled exam, state rules require you to wait a minimum of 10 days before you can try again.

  • The exam is notoriously challenging and relies heavily on memorization and application of complex laws—not just intuition. To pass, you must clear both sections of the test individually: the National section (which requires roughly a 71% to pass) and the State-specific section (which requires a 75%). Thorough, structured studying is essential for success.

  • Consistent, targeted practice is your best strategy. Rather than just re-reading the textbook, actively test your knowledge using full-length exam simulations and flashcards. Focus heavily on the North Carolina state-specific laws, as this section is widely considered the trickiest part of the test.

  • The exam scheduling fee through Pearson VUE is $64 per attempt. Keep in mind that this is just the testing fee—obtaining your license also requires a $100 application fee to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC), along with costs for your mandatory pre-licensing course and a background check.

  • You are given a total of 4.5 hours to complete the exam. This time is strictly divided between the two portions of the test:

    • National section: 2.5 hours (150 minutes)

    • State-specific section: 2 hours (120 minutes)
